Three product leaders from Usersnap, FullStory, and Close share the five practices they used to ship AI features without eroding customer trust.

Most product teams shipping AI features are thinking about the wrong problem. They're obsessing over model accuracy, latency, and feature parity while their users are quietly losing confidence in the product itself.
Trust isn't a soft concern. It's the thing that determines whether a user gives your AI feature a second chance after it gets something wrong, or just quietly churns.
I moderated a panel with three product leaders who have shipped AI at scale: Shannon Vettes, CEO and CPO of Usersnap; Angela Sze, Senior Director of Product at FullStory; and Lauren Schuman, VP of Product Growth at Close. Each of them has navigated the tension between moving fast on AI and keeping customers on their side. Here's what they learned.
There's a common assumption in product teams that trust is earned after the fact. You ship the feature, prove it works, and users come around. Shannon pushed back on that directly early in the session:
"That trust factor was the biggest reason why we decided to go all in on AI. I can't trust it — and that was the problem we had to solve."
That framing matters. Trust isn't something you recover after a bad AI experience. For most B2B users, one confusing or embarrassing AI output in front of a customer or executive can set adoption back months. The teams that get this right build trust into the product from the start, not as a patch after launch.
Five practices emerged from the conversation. They're not a linear framework; more like load-bearing walls. Remove any one of them and the structure gets unstable.
Every panelist traced their AI investment back to a specific, concrete pain point. Not a product roadmap or a competitor announcement.
Shannon described the moment that pushed Usersnap toward AI:
"I still have to tag every single feedback for its topic. I'm like, this is silly. I wanted to be ahead."
Lauren pointed to a persistent problem inside Close's CRM:
"For years, nobody wants to spend time manually entering data. Having a sales call and then adding all this data to the CRM manually is just overwhelming."
Angela framed it as finally seeing a path forward on something her team had been stuck on for a long time:
"We finally saw a new avenue that we could start to address this obstacle that we'd been fundamentally facing for so long."
This is the distinction that separates AI features users actually adopt from ones that get buried in the settings menu. When you start from a real frustration, something users complain about, work around, or just give up on, the AI feature has a job to do from day one. When you start from capability, you're asking users to figure out why they should care.
The onboarding implication is direct: if your AI feature doesn't have a clear, specific use case that users recognize in the first session, they won't come back to explore it later.
B2B buyers, especially in enterprise, are increasingly asking hard questions about AI before they sign. Where does my data go? Who can see it? What happens if the model is wrong?
Shannon described the pressure Usersnap faced early:
"I didn't want to use an AI platform because: not secure, not compliant. We have to solve this problem. We have to show schemas and literally demonstrate what happens to their data."
Angela described how FullStory approached it:
"AI is built on top of the existing PII compliance rules that we've gotten certified for."
They didn't treat compliance as a separate workstream; it was a constraint that shaped the product architecture from the beginning.
The practical takeaway isn't just "get lawyers involved earlier" (though that helps). It's that your onboarding experience needs to address these questions proactively. If users have to hunt for a data policy or submit a support ticket to understand how your AI model works, you've already lost ground on trust before they've seen any value.
This one sounds obvious. It isn't practiced nearly enough.
Lauren's team at Close built an AI voice agent called Chloe. They were explicit about it from the start:
"In our setup flow, we mention, 'Hey, this is Chloe, an AI teammate. Chat with her like a team member.' Those that do that end up having ultimately a better experience."
They also built a live transfer option. If a user wanted to escalate to a human, they could. That escape hatch signals that the product isn't trying to trap anyone. It's a small design decision with a disproportionate effect on how users relate to the AI overall.
Shannon made the same point without softening it:
"If you don't tell them and they figure it out, you've just burned the trust of that customer. The less you tell people they're talking to AI, the more distrust you create. Just be upfront about it and be upfront about the limitations too."
Naming the AI, setting accurate expectations, and giving users a way out are all versions of the same principle: don't ask users to trust something they don't understand.
All three panelists ran staged rollouts. What made the difference wasn't the staging itself; it was how seriously they took what they learned.
Shannon's beta phase stretched three months longer than planned:
"Our beta release ended up going three months because people were like, 'What is this now?' We had to keep refining."
Lauren described how Close's alpha users completely redirected the roadmap for Chloe:
"Our alpha customers were basically like, no. We don't want structured lead qualification. We want discovery calls, cold lead re-engagement, purchase follow-ups. We had to find a way to support these different types of jobs."
Angela's advice cut to the core of why iteration matters:
"You have to push something out there, start using it ideally yourselves, and really drink your own champagne. As much as frustration was driving us, it's also the excitement to learn. You have to be willing to fail for the ultimate success."
She also flagged a pattern worth watching: the more data-savvy a user was, the more value they got from the AI features. That's a signal about where onboarding needs to do more work. If your AI feature only clicks for sophisticated users, you have a gap in how you're explaining it, not a gap in who you're selling to.
Lauren noticed something troubling when she looked at how other AI products handled onboarding:
"I'm actually shocked at how many AI tools are just an open box. Completely overwhelming and not very guided. You have to invest time and energy into making it good, and keep coming back to it."
Close's answer was to use AI to onboard users to AI. Lauren's team built a voice agent onboarding flow that walked users through setup conversationally:
"We said, what better way than to actually use a voice agent to onboard to the voice agent?"
Shannon took a similar approach at Usersnap, leaning heavily on customer advisory boards and fake door tests to bring users along before anything shipped:
"We do fake door a lot. We do waitlists. We have a customer advisory board, all really enthusiastic."
Angela pointed to a subtler version of the same problem: users who were anxious about "doing it wrong." That anxiety doesn't go away on its own. It has to be designed around, with clearer empty states, contextual prompts, and onboarding flows that make users feel capable before they're left to explore on their own.
The teams winning on AI adoption aren't just building better models. They're building better first experiences around those models.
Angela put the long-term opportunity in terms that stuck with me:
"AI can show you all of its reasoning. If you could see where it misunderstood and just correct that small point, that's something AI can give that humans can't."
That's the real promise: not AI that's always right, but AI that helps users understand why it made a decision and lets them correct it. That kind of transparency is what turns a feature users tolerate into one they trust.
The teams that will win on AI adoption aren't shipping the most features. They're the ones that treat trust as a product problem, something to be designed, tested, and iterated on, the same way you'd treat any other core experience.
